Installing Neo4j on Jetstream2

Complete deployment guide for Neo4j 5.x on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

1. System Information

The benchmark environment is built on Jetstream2 using the Big_Data_Hadoop-NEW_IMAGE. The instance utilizes a 16-core AMD EPYC-Milan CPU, 60 GB RAM, and Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS.

2. Installation & Configuration

Download and Install Neo4j

Add the Neo4j repository and install the stable 5.x release:

bash
wget -O - https://debian.neo4j.com/neotechnology.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -
echo 'deb https://debian.neo4j.com stable 5' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neo4j.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install neo4j

Enable Extensions (APOC & GDS)

Install the Awesome Procedures on Cypher (APOC) core library to the plugins directory:

bash
sudo wget https://github.com/neo4j/apoc/releases/download/5.26.0/apoc-5.26.0-core.jar -P /var/lib/neo4j/plugins/
sudo chown neo4j:neo4j /var/lib/neo4j/plugins/apoc-5.26.0-core.jar

Server Configuration

Edit /etc/neo4j/neo4j.conf to enable remote access and security allowlists:

properties
server.default_listen_address=0.0.0.0
dbms.security.procedures.unrestricted=apoc.*,gds.*
dbms.security.procedures.allowlist=apoc.*,gds.*
dbms.security.auth_enabled=false

Configure APOC filesystem permissions in /etc/neo4j/apoc.conf:

properties
apoc.import.file.enabled=true
apoc.import.file.use_neo4j_config=true
apoc.export.file.enabled=true

3. Firewall Access

Expose the Bolt protocol and Web UI ports:

bash
sudo ufw allow 7474/tcp
sudo ufw allow 7687/tcp

4. Service Management

Initialize and verify the Neo4j background process:

bash
sudo systemctl enable neo4j
sudo systemctl start neo4j
sudo systemctl status neo4j --no-pager -l

5. Customizing Ingestion Paths

To import from a large shared volume, modify the import directory in neo4j.conf:

properties
server.directories.import=/shared/datasets
bash
sudo systemctl restart neo4j
