FARS Dataset

Analyzing nationwide fatal motor vehicle crash dynamics through interconnected vehicle, person, and roadway networks

Dataset Overview

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) is a nationwide census managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. It provides the public, Congress, and researchers with objective data regarding fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes within the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. To be included in FARS, a crash must involve a motor vehicle traveling on a trafficway open to the public, and must result in the death of a person (either an occupant of a vehicle or a non-motorist) within 30 days of the crash. Check the official dataset website here.

For graph benchmarking purposes, FARS is modeled as a property graph where crashes, vehicles, and people are represented as nodes, and their interactions are modeled as edges:

Total node count: 11,948,992

Total edge count: 32,241,759

Dataset Download

You can download the raw FARS data files in CSV, SAS, or DBF format directly from the NHTSA FTP server. For example, you can use command line tools like wget or curl to recursively fetch the annual data zip files:

bash
wget --no-parent -r -nd -A "*.zip" ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/fars/

Alternatively, you can query crash records programmatically via the NHTSA Crash Data API using Python:

python
import requests

# Query the Crash Data API for fatal crash details in a specific year
year = 2021
url = f"https://api.nhtsa.gov/CrashAPI/crashes/GetCrashesByYear?year={year}&format=json"
response = requests.get(url)

if response.status_code == 200:
    data = response.json()
    crashes = data.get("Results", [])
    print(f"Retrieved {len(crashes)} fatal crash records.")
else:
    print("Failed to retrieve data")
